How to style longer hair

I have grown my hair longer, but am always a little unsure how to style it. What sort of products/techniques should I be using to achieve a style like the attached:

Get a hair straightener and put it like the picture in that link. Its hott.

You can first of all go to a hairstylist to do the styling for you and at the same time asking for advices,how to do it on your own and which products to use....
